RISE Research Institutes of Sweden has published a web site with issued certificates regarding fire suppression systems for installation in engine compartments of buses and coaches. There are two types of available certificates; P-mark certificates in accordance with the certification rules SPCR 183 and UNECE type approvals based on UNECE Regulation 107 Annex 13.
Through these two certification schemes the market has a common platform for securing a minimum level of safety and security for fire suppression systems. Further on a certified fire suppression system has been fire tested in a well-defined and objective way to realistic fire hazards that can occur on a bus based on sound science. In addition, by choosing a certified system it is ensured that the fire suppression system has good distribution of the suppression agent as well as high suppression performance with re-ignition protection as well as a high safety level regarding amount of suppression agent and number of nozzles.
Both certification schemes are based on the fire testing method SP method 4912. SP method 4912 includes 11 different tests.
A UNECE type approved fire suppression based on UNECE Regulation 107 Annex 13 has been tested and passed 4 of the 11 tests in SP method 4912.
By choosing a P-mark certified fire suppression system you will get even further security as the included components in the fire suppression system have been tested for harsh environments to secure their survivability so that the system remains operational after being exposed to vibration, temperature changes, corrosion, road dust etc. Most important it is secured that the system with included components will not fail before it is activated and discharged. Further on the fire suppression manufacturer’s factory production control (FPC) is annually audited by independent approved third party auditors as part of the overall quality assurance. A P-mark certified fire suppression system has been tested for the 11 of the 11 tests in SP method 4912. The minimum rating for obtaining a P-mark certificate is 6 passed tests including some compulsory ones.
By choosing a certified fire suppression system you will be able to achieve:
- Safe escape for passengers
- Reduction of loss of lives
- Reduction of loss of buses
- Securing business continuity
- Reduction of societal costs
- Enhancing goodwill
